Three pathways to Skilled Migrant Category residence

The Skilled Migrant Category has three pathways. Each leads to residence, but their tests for occupation, pay, experience and qualifications are different.

1. Points-based pathway

This route uses one recognised skill category: eligible registration, qualification or income. If that category gives fewer than six points, qualifying skilled work experience in New Zealand may make up the balance.

2. Skilled Work Experience pathway

This route is for applicants with directly relevant skilled work history. It requires specific periods of relevant experience, including a separate New Zealand work component, and is affected by occupation list rules.

3. Trades and Technician pathway

This route is limited to eligible occupations on the Trades and Technician list. It requires a relevant qualification and post-qualification experience, including skilled work in New Zealand.
