What is a character waiver?

Where an applicant does not meet the character requirements, Immigration New Zealand may have discretion to grant a waiver. The decision depends on the relevant instructions and the full facts of the case; there is no automatic outcome.

Disclose and explain

Declare convictions, deportations, pending matters and prior immigration issues accurately. Supporting records, a clear chronology, evidence of rehabilitation and a thoughtful explanation can be important to a decision-maker.

Do not leave this until the last minute

Character assessments can require documents from more than one country and time to prepare a complete response. Obtain advice early if the issue could affect a visa plan.
